WHY
WE CAME TOGETHER: We came together, in June 2004, out of
a common concern for the effects that the mining of nonferrous metallic
minerals (sulfide mining) may have on the Yellow Dog Plains. We
had all studied the issue before determining that it was not in
the best interest of Marquette and Baraga County residents environmentally,
economically, or social/culturally. We felt that the voices of the
people were not being heard. There was no adequate forum for public
discussion of the issue.
WHO WE ARE: We are a demographic cross-section
of Powell Township residents. Although the core of our group are
Powell Township residents, residency is not a requirement for membership,
you only need to share a desire educate our communities and our
leaders about the environmental, economic, soio-cultural, and historical
facts of sulfide mining.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE: We have gathered close
to 400 signatures from Powell Township residents that declare opposition
to sulfide mining on the Yellow Dog Plains. There are slightly more
than 500 registered voters in Powell Township.
We have gathered 3,000 signatures requesting an independent 3rd
party hydrological baseline by the United States Geological Survey
(USGS) of the Yellow Dog Plains.
We have/are lobbying political, social, and economic entities for
support of USGS baseline hydrological study of the Yellow Dog Plains.
We are continuing to educate and update the public on the issues
and process surrounding the permitting of sulfide mining. |
